This week, PR guru Liz Matthews - and Marie Claire mentor - explains why trial and error is important when finding your dream job.
With more than a decade of experience Liz Matthews' enviable client list includes Rosie Huntington-Whiteley and Alexa Chung. She founded Liz Matthews PR in 2006. ‘Don’t worry if you don’t immediately know exactly what you want to do career-wise. I worked in the consumer, corporate and health sectors before I settled on entertainment PR.
'How can you know what you want to do if you haven’t tried any of the options? ‘After studying media at Manchester I did a work placement for City Life, reviewing movies and restaurants but I wasn’t cut out for journalism.
'I ended up working for an entrepreneur who told me I’d be good at PR. At the time, I didn’t even know what PR was but I gave it a go. 'When you find something you enjoy it’s like a chemical reaction. There’s no point in being 80 per cent interested in what you do – find that job that makes you want to jump out of bed in the morning.’
Every week a businesswoman or professional from Marie Claire's Inspire & Mentor campaign posts their favourite piece of career advice.
