Aubaine
Chic French treats on the Brompton Road
Chic French treats on the Brompton Road
Where? 260-262 Brompton Road, London SW3 2AS (020-7052 0100)
Mood? Bright and breezy with plenty of French flavour. In fact, the only area in which Aubaine fails to deliver a truly authentic French experience is the service: the staff are all far too cheery!
Who goes? Given the location (just a few doors down from Chanel), you'd be forgiven for thinking Aubaine would be full of ladies who lunch and, in all fairness, there's a certain groomed look about the regulars, but a long farmhouse-style shared table, the buzzy patisserie counter and charming waiters make it a warm and welcoming experience for even those who acquiesce to leave the flat without a blow-dry as standard.
Why go? For the crumbliest croissants this side of the Eiffel Tower and desserts to slay even the strictest diet slave.
To eat? Did we mention the sweets were good? In all honesty, we'd skip starters and mains and just have three rounds from the patisserie counter if appearances would allow it. Instead, choose one of the salads (the classic Salade Aubaine with king prawns or the baby aubergine and goats' cheese salad are both good) to ensure there's plenty of room for afters.
To drink? The cappuccino and café crèmes are excellent as is the hot chocolate, especially when enjoyed with a pain au chocolate.
