Turkish Twitter users are laughing in the face of deputy Prime Minister Bülent Arinç’s sexist comments from earlier in the week, by kick-starting an incredible social media LOL-along worldwide.
In a speech to mark the end of Ramadan on Monday, Arinç stated that women should not laugh in public and should remain ‘ornament’-like at all times. "Chastity is so important,” he told crowds. “It's not just a word, it's an ornament [for women]. A woman should be chaste. She should know the difference between public and private. She should not laugh in public."
Thousands of women and men have been responding by posting their laughing selfies, prompting the hashtags #direnkahkaha (resist laughter) and #direnkadin (resist woman) to start trending globally on Twitter.
Arinç went on to criticise women who "despite being married with kids go on vacation with their boyfriends" in his speech and also slammed girls who "never miss the chance to wrap themselves around a dancing pole".
With the country's presedential elections happening just next week, we wonder how long it will take for this slightly out-of-touch politician to be ousted...
