Her Majesty becomes first Royal to twitter
The Queen’s Commonwealth Observance, to be held on Monday in Westminster Abbey, will appear live on blogging website Twitter.
Officials will send ‘tweets’ about the rehearsals, the arrangements and a blow-by-blow account of the service itself.
The Queen is already known to email her grandchildren and her Christmas message appears on YouTube. Now she has taken a further bold technological step by becoming the first member of the Royal family to ‘twitter’. The Observance was previously broadcast live on the BBC World Service until four years ago, but, in keeping with Her Majesty's desire to appeal to the younger generation, the debut tweet will, according to a spokesman for the abbey, be ‘pretty spontaneous and in the spirit of Twitter’.
The service marks the 60th anniversary of the modern commonwealth and will be attended by representatives from all the countries.
Last month, the Queen relaunched her website with the help of Sir Tim Berners-Lee, and, in 2008, the Royal Channel was added on YouTube. It was in 1953 that television cameras were allowed into the abbey for the first time for the Coronation.
