Planning permission is granted to install London cable cars that will span the Thames to reduce journey times in east London
The Greater London Authority has given planning permission for cable cars to cross the Thames, cutting commuter journey times and offering spectacular views.
The Greater London Authority was the last hurdle in the planning process, following the approval of Greenwich and Newham councils and the London Thames Gateway Development Corporation.
Welcoming the news, Mayor of London Boris Johnson says: ‘With permissions signed and sealed we are now a significant step closer to being able to cruise the east London skyline via an elegant cable car spanning the mighty Thames.'
Discussions for funding are ongoing, but support is expected from a combination of sources, including third party sponsorship andfare revenues. Once up and running the car will carry 2,500 passengers an hour, cutting journey times between Greenwich Peninsula and Royal Docks.
A contractor for the development is expected to be appointed this Spring and Mr Johnson says: ‘The cable car will be a truly exhilarating way for Londoners and visitors to explore our great citywhilst providing a much needed river crossing to support the once-in-a-lifetime regeneration of this easterly quarter of the capital.’
Cable cars would cross the Thames at a height of over 50m, enabling passengers to enjoy spectacular views of London including the impressive O2 arena and the Olympic Park.
