The Doctor Who actor will star in the television play
Doctor Who actor David Tennant will perform in a BBC Two production of Hamlet with the main cast members of the recent Royal Shakespeare Company version - including Star Trek actor Patrick Stewart. BBC Two controller Janice Hadlow said the 180-minute screen production of Hamlet was ‘a wonderful opportunity to bring one of the great stage successes of last year to a wider audience’. Tickets sold out in hours for Tennant's stage performances, which opened in Stratford-Upon-Avon last year and later moved to London.
He was unable to perform for a while after hurting his back. Thousands of fans were left disappointed when Tennant was forced to pull out of the production in January to undergo surgery for a prolapsed disc.
His recovery was slow and the RSC voiced doubts that he would return at all. Understudy Edward Bennett won acclaim for taking the lead role. Bennett has returned to his original role as Laertes.
The BBC said Tennant finished filming his farewell Doctor Who episodes last week. They will be shown later this year.
He announced he was leaving the BBC show at last year's National Television Awards.
