Thousands more are expected to take snow days today as travel networks across the country struggle to cope in the severe weather.

With temperatures plummeting to minus 18 in some areas last night, forecasters are predicting another eight inches of snow across the east and south of England today as the cold snap refuses to let up.
Motorways and main roads up and down the UK are experiencing gridlock as motorists battle to make it to work, facing thick snow drifts and patches of treacherous black ice on surfaces yet to be gritted.
And rail networks are faring little better.
With another six inches of snow falling in Kent last night, many rail companies are running highly-restricted skeleton services, with scores of journeys being cancelled.

Southern Railway has resorted to cancelling all services for the foreseeable future.
Tens of thousands of passengers hoping to fly are also facing disappointment, as Gatwick and Edinburgh airports remain closed for another day.
Schools across the UK are also facing closures for another day, allowing thousands of children to go out and enjoy the wintry conditions.
