Vampire Diaries co-stars Ian Somerhalder And Nina Dobrev have reportedly called time on their three year romance.

US Weekly have claimed that the former couple, who first met on the set of the hit Vampire Diaries series in 2011, have decided to go their separate ways, but a source claims the two are 'consummate professionals' and 'will continue to work together and remain best friends, which is where the relationship started.'

While there has been no official comment from either camps, yesterday 34-year-old Somerhalder posted a cryptic tweet from deceased playwright Lillian Hellman saying: 'A thought for today: 'People change and forget to tell each other.'

Meanwhile Nina, 24, walked the red carpet at the Met Ball Gala on Monday night alone before attending an afterparty with a female friend.

Last year, Nina opened up to Seventeen magazine about falling for Ian, confessing: 'I didn't want to be dating one of my costars - my goal on the show was to be professional.

'But sometimes you can't help who you have a connection with, and you can only fight it for so long -- which I did for a really, really long time.'

In happier news, The Vampire Diaries has been given the green light for a fifth season.
