Meghan Markle's trip to Wimbledon earlier this month was criticised by the media and some royal fans alike. The Duchess of Sussex appeared at the competition with two friends to support one of her Hollywood pals, Serena Williams, and also attended the event alongside Kate and Pippa Middleton.
But it caused a stir when Meghan's bodyguards asked those around her not to take pictures of the Duchess as she was there in 'a private capacity'. It divided fans, with some believing that as a public figure sitting in the royal box in Centre Court she should expect the attention, and others defending her for wanting privacy.
So when Serena was asked about her friend post-match, the tennis player said she wasn't aware that 'there was negative media out there' regarding Meghan, and instead focused on what a good friend she was.
Serena continued: 'Any time I see her name attached to anything, I don't read it.
'She couldn't be a better friend to me. Low moments, high moments, she's always there. That's all I want to be to her.'
When asked if she knew that Meghan was coming to watch her play, Serena said: 'Yes I knew she was there, it’s always exciting when she comes out to watch and support the tennis.
'I was happy.'
