This year's nominations list for the MTV VMA Awards, taking place on 6 September in LA, is out, with Rihanna and Drake leading the pack and One Direction in the running for Best Pop Video and Best New Artist.

The MTV Video Music Awards - which in 2011 offered plenty of dramatic viewing with Beyoncé revealing her baby bump in a head-turning Lanvin gown and Lady Gaga in drag as alter-ego Jo Calderone - are back. And the nominees are...

Rihanna and rapper Drake dominated the nominations list with five nods each, followed by Katy Perry with four nominations and Brit boy band One Direction scoring two nods. Coldplay, Justin Bieber, Chris Brown, The Wanted and Kanye West are all up for awards as well.

Most notably, perhaps, was the significant name missing from the nominations: Lady Gaga's. We hope she still attends the festivities - her antics always make the evening - but at least we have the adorable Harry Styles to fawn over if she doesn't make an appearance.
