LA police responded to a 911 call at around 12.30am, after the couple had left Clive Davis's star-studded pre-Grammys party at LA's Beverly Hilton on Saturday night.
A statement from the LAPD said the pair 'became involved in an argument. After stopping his car, Brown and the woman got out and the argument escalated. The woman suffered visible injuries and identified Brown as her attacker.'
Reports that Rihanna is the victim have not been substantiated. Officer April Harding said: 'The identity of the victim will not be released. Any victim who's involved in a domestic violence incident is entitled to confidentiality.'
19-year-old Brown turned himself in to the police last night. He was taken into custody at 6.30pm, and was booked for alleged criminal threat at 7.41pm, before being released after posting a $50,000 (£33,000) bail.

The Forever singer will face the charges in court on 5 March.
Representatives for Brown have not commented on the incident, while Rihanna's publicist stated that the singer had been involved in a traffic mishap but was 'fine'.
Rihanna was supposed to open the Grammy ceremony last night and was also nominated for three awards including Best Dance Recording for her hit single Disturbia.
Brown was also meant to perform on the night, as well as being shortlisted for two gongs.
