Killer fats banned in New York set for UK ban, too
NEW YORK HAS already banned trans fats and now the UK could be set to ban them, too.
Used primarily in ready meals and junk food, but just as likely to be found in everyday products like peanut butter, trans fats are used to extend the shelf life of products, however have no nutritional value of their own.
With fresh warnings about rising obesity levels - a new report claims half the population could be obese by 2030 - the Food Standards Agency is set to carry out a study into whether it would be feasible to ban them outright in this country.
'We know we must act. We cannot afford not to act,' heath secretary Alan Johnson said yesterday. 'For the first time we are clear about the magnitude of the problem - we are facing a potential crisis on the scale of climate change and it is in everybody's interest to turn things around.'
