Why eating celery is good for the brain
Celery looks set to join watercress and strawberries as a must-eat superfood after scientists discovered it can help fight mental health diseases.
A study has shown that the compounds lutolin and diosmin, both of which occur naturally in celery, could help fight Alzheimer's and other similar diseases.
'The compounds have few side effects and are available as dietary supplements,' says Dr Terrence Town of Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, Los Angeles.
So far, the research has only taken place on mice and further human-based research will have to take place before any conclusive results can be published.
However, Dr Susanne Sorensen, of the Alzheimer’s Society, tells The Times: 'We know a healthy balanced diet can reduce dementia risk. This work reinforces the need to eat a diet rich in fruit and vegetables.'
