New York gets shorty

Along with spotting more than a handful of editors wearing jumpsuits this week, I've also noticed plenty of fashion show attendees in shorts (none of them British, mind you).

And, in keeping with the trend of the catwalk reflecting the front row this season, today's catwalks were awash with shorts of pretty much every length, shape and colour.

At Nanette Lepore's colourful early morning collection (ok, it was 11am, maybe not that early), where soft languid shapes and splashy watercolour prints ruled the runway, there were long shorts, short shorts, plain shorts, pattered shorts, cycling shorts, culotte shorts and everything in-between.

Later at the oh-so-sweet Milly show, shorts came crafted from silk and satin, and were worn with beaded boleros or gauzy blouses.

Finally, even red-carpet favourite Marchesa found room in its stunning, Madame Butterfly-inspired collection for a pair, worn ultra-short and paired with an embroidered white obi jacket.

So much for forgiving trousers, or long, floaty dresses, summer 2010 looks set to be all about the leg. Maybe it really is time to join a gym?
