While many of our favourite fashion items fall in and out of favour over the years depending on the season's trends, jackets and coats have a slower cycle and many styles will stay put season after season, the sartorial stalwarts of our wardrobes. One such piece, is of course the trusty leather jacket, which although goes through a reimagining each season, is never far from our grasp as we head out the door. This year it’s no different, and although you may be thinking it's a little to early (and chilly) to be reaching for yours just yet, the style set are saying no, and pitching it as the ultimate rainy day cover up.

What's makes the leather jacket so perfect for wearing right now? Well, aside from looking ultra chic, the fabric is a smart choice for wearing on rainy days. While it won't give you quite as much protection as say, a waterproof rain coat, the wipe clean fabric does have some water resistance which will ensure you say drier than a wool or fabric iteration.

What types of leather jackets are in style?

If you're wondering what types of leather jackets are trending this season, the great thing is there are no limits. Biker styles are ever classic especially when worn in oversized or menswear inspired fits. Leather bomber jackets are also big news and a firm favourite with celebrities including Elsa Hosk and Hailey Bieber.

When it comes to washes, as if in defiance to the polished leather jackets of the past, lived-in styles are having a moment. Some of the best leather jackets feature distressed and worn-in in shades of washed black and chocolate brown giving off a vintage feel (even if they were bought just last week). And, if you don’t have a pre-loved leather jacket hanging in the back of your wardrobe, don’t worry because designers and high street stores alike have sat up and taken notice of the trend, doing the hard work for you to create styles that look like you’ve loved them for years.
