Stripes at the ready

One thing’s for sure, right now we’re all in our sporty fashion era. First, tenniscore took hold and had us all sporting our best Wimbledon whites, then the Euros had us all fighting to get our hands on the cutest vintage football shirts, and now it's only fitting we turn to the rugby shirt in the midst of the Women's Rugby World Cup.
Originating in the 1800’s as the uniform of choice for rugby leagues, the rugby shirt is most noted for its chunky coloured stripes paired with a contrasting, usually white, collar. This season, however, it’s made its way off the field and is fast becoming the chicest piece to introduce into your summer wardrobe.
Last year, rugby shirts were spotted at Dries Van Noten's Spring/Summer 2024 runway show and have since continued to gain popularity. Most recently, this season's shows saw Casablanca, Kent & Curwen, and Simone Rocha styling the top alongside trousers, skirts and reinventing them as mini dresses.
While the catwalks have provided the perfect starting point, it’s the street style set who have been catching our eye, restyling the humble shirt into something fresh and interesting. From pairing it alongside Bermuda shorts and denim to polishing the rugby top with leather and sequin skirts, it proves its versatility.
So with all the styling possibilities awaiting, why wait to invest? Our expert eye tells us now is the perfect time to give them a try (no pun intended).
